A group of Milton High School students took first place in a statewide LifeSmarts tournament earlier this month, securing an all expenses paid trip to the national championship in April in Philadelphia.

According to LifeSmarts coach Paul Arenburg, the students were quizzed in five content areas: personal finance, technology, consumer rights and responsibilities, health and safety, and the environment. He added that their studying and team effort played into their success.

“These students worked hard and they rose to the occasion,” Arenburg said.

A blog post on the LifeSmarts website said the Milton team was neck-and-neck with a team from Palmer High School until the “Challenge Round,” when Milton pulled ahead for the win.

The national competition in Philadelphia will be held from April 21 to April 24 and cover the same topics as the statewide contest.

Arenburg said the LifeSmarts program, which is sponsored by the National Consumers League, helps students learn and develop marketplace skills that he says will help them make more intelligent decisions as workers, consumers, and citizens.
