House break-in leads to chase by Milton, Canton police

Two would-be housebreakers were foiled in the act after a timely 911 call to police and an extensive police chase Monday, according to Milton Deputy Police Chief Charles Paris.

Police arrested Marcos Beato, 47, of Randolph and Hector L. Sanchez, 43, of Dorchester following a call from a Hilltop Street resident, who came home early Monday afternoon and found a strange car parked in her driveway. Paris characterized the two men as career criminals, who had more than 100 crimes on their records.

The two suspects got into a car driven by Beato and attempted to flee, but Milton officer Matt Mercer caught up with the vehicle on Harborview Road, according to a police statement issued Tuesday.

Attempting to ram the police cruiser, the suspects fled across Randolph Avenue onto Chickatawbut Road and then onto Route 138 northbound toward Boston, the statement said. Police vehicles from Milton and Canton pursued the suspects.

The vehicle crashed near Brook Road and Austin Street, and the two men exited the vehicle and fled on foot toward Brush Hill Road and the Neponset River, the statement said.

One of them scaled a seven-foot barbed wire fence trying to get to the river and cross into Boston, but was apprehended on the other side by Officer Jason Conklin, who vaulted the fence and tackled the suspect, according to the statement.

The other man was arrested by Detective Mike Dillon and Officers Mark Cimildoro and Matt Mercer before he could climb the fence, the statement said.

Paris said Beato was charged with daytime breaking and entering, malicious destruction of property, larceny over $250, and three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon – all felonies – as well as reckless operation of a vehicle, failure to stop for police, a red light violation, and a marked lanes violation.

Sanchez was charged with daytime breaking and entering, malicious destruction of property, and larceny over $250.

“This case was an excellent team effort on behalf of all of the officers and detectives working yesterday,” the police statement read. “It also shows how important it is for residents to be attentive and always call 911 at the first sign of something suspicious in your neighborhood.”
