For the fifth year, Milton High School students will put one foot in front of the other to come to the aid of their sports and clubs.

On Feb. 9, students from grades 8 to 12 will participate in the Walk-A-Thon, an annual fund-raiser for extracurricular activities.

Maureen Griffin, a parent and one of the organizers of the events, came to Wednesday’s School Committee meeting with four Milton High athletes to discuss the event.

“This is the fifth time we’ve done it and it has gotten bigger and better every time,” Griffin said.

Milton High sophomore Olivia Taber, a member of the basketball and volleyball teams as well as a member of the French Club, said sports and clubs are a big part of the high school experience.

Conor Regan, a three-sport athlete participating in football, basketball, and baseball, agreed.

Sophomore Kendall Stanley urged School Committee members and other community members to give donations to their high school neighbors, and added that many businesses would be supporting the Walk-A-Thon, as well.

Ally Jones participates in field hockey, basketball, the outdoors club and Best Buddies. “The purpose of the Walk-A-Thon is to offset the costs of one third of the budget,” Jones said. “We are dependent on fund-raising efforts.”

Griffin said she hoped the event would bring in $30,000, the same amount that was raised at last year’s event.

The school budget accounts for one third of the costs of sports and clubs, and one third is supported by fees and gate receipts. The final third depends on this event, according to school officials.

There are 29 sports and 32 clubs at Milton High.

The annual Walk-a-Thon will take place Saturday, Feb. 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Copeland Field House at the high school.

To donate to the event, make a check out to Milton High School and send it to the superintendent’s office at Milton Public Schools, 25 Gile St., Milton 02186. For more information, call Superintendent Mary C. Gormley at 617-696-4470.
