Milton’s Cunningham and Collicot Elementary Schools are ready for an invasion of robots.

The Milton High School Robotics Team will host a statewide robotics competition at the two adjacent schools this Sunday. The contest will be an official qualifying event for the FIRST Tech Challenge, an organization devoted to inspiring young people to be science and technology leaders.

This year’s competition is called Ring it Up. It requires student teams to build a robot that can place plastic rings on an array of PVC pipes.

Milton’s robotics team consists of 15 students from grades 9 to 12. Students have learned how to program robots in their computer science class and meet after school to build them. In September, the team received a $1,000 grant from PTC, a Needham- based technology corporation, and is looking for additional corporate and private sponsors.

Teams such as Milton’s from across New England will compete during the event, and 15 to 18 of them are expected.

Opening ceremonies will be at the Cunningham cafeteria at 10 a.m. and the awards ceremony will take place at 4:45 p.m.

Volunteers are still needed for the event to register competitors, referee the competition, supervise the teams, keep score, provide music, and provide technical support on the practice field.

Those interested in volunteering should contact Milton Public Schools Director of Science at mdecker@miltonps.org.
