Residents and others will have more time to comment on a controversial affordable housing development on Brush Hill Road, according to a statement from the office of State Sen. Brian A. Joyce.

The proposed 276-unit development near the Fuller Village retirement community has brought out a negative reaction from many Milton residents who fear the large development could hinder traffic, negatively affect wildlife habitats, and increase town expenses in Milton.

The Massachusetts Housing Finance Agency, also known as MassHousing, has extended the period to comment on the project until June 9.

ā€œIā€™m thankful that MassHousing was willing to listen to the concerns raised by town officials and residents have provided the time for all viewpoints to be heard,ā€ Joyce stated in the release.

Because the project is moving forward under the state's 40B law, which allows developers building affordable housing to bypass local laws, Milton's local zoning ordinance will have less power to regulate it. Instead, MassHousing will approve or deny the project.
