Daniel Shupert says he "just shot up and did it" when he saw a classmate choking.

The Natick Fire Department awarded a certificate of merit Tuesday night to a 9-year-old boy who is credited with saving the life of a fellow student by performing the Heimlich maneuver on him.

Daniel Shupert received the honor at Wilson Middle School during the annual Town Meeting, with about 200 people in attendance, said Natick Fire Chief James Sheridan.

The boy leapt into action on March 14 when a fellow student began choking on the Pirate's Booty snack in the school cafeteria.

“I just did it; I just shot up and did it,” Shupert told the Globe Tuesday.
