A Natick man and teenager were arrested Saturday night for allegedly pulling a false fire alarm.

Justin McCarthy, 23, of Westfield Rd. and Robert Laing, 17, of Rockwood Rd., were arrested on charges that include falsely pulling a fire alarm.

Police also charged McCarthy with disorderly conduct, tampering with a fire call box, furnishing liquor to a minor, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Laing also was charged with disturbing the peace.

Natick police said in a prepared statement that over the past few weeks, the department has been plagued with a rash of malicious fire alarm pulls, and that it creates a myriad of problems for responding officers.

Police said in the statement that false fire pulls waste municipal assets, distract officers from normal duties, and create a potential of accidents for responding units and a delayed response to actual emergencies, which the department said happened last weekend.

"These acts are not simply foolhardy, they are dangerous," the statement said.

McCarthy and Laing were released on personal recognizance at their arraignment at the Natick District Court this morning, with a pre-trial date set for March 14.

Both were ordered to stay away from alcoholic beverages and to submit to random weekly alcohol screening.
