Needham's boys hockey team (18-3-1) won its final nine games, playing well enough to earn the No. 2 seed in the Super 8 postseason tourney.

An unlikely player, third-string goalie Evan McDonald stepped forward to register wins in his first two varsity starts, making 22 saves in a 1-0 victory over high-powered Malden Catholic in the championship game of the Springfield Cathedral Tournament. The sophomore followed that with a 20-save effort in a 5-2 win over Duxbury.

With Bay State League All-Star Sam Gifford out with a tweaked hamstring, and regular backup Chris Gates out with the flu, MacDonald got the call, and delivered for the Rockets.
