The latest on Newman School

Posted May 8, 2009 05:34 PM

As questions about the Newman Elementary School swirl about town, Needham Public Schools department has posted answers to Frequently Asked Questions on its website. You can find them right here.

Town meeting is considering $450,000 in design money for the school. The project to replace ventilation at the school will cost an estimated $17-million, a cost shared by the town and state.

"Completion of the project is contingent upon a successful debt exclusion override and
Town Meeting approval of the remaining project costs, both tentatively scheduled for Winter
2009,'' the FAQ states.

Also this week, resident Rick Freedman wrote an open letter to Town Meeting members urging them to reject design money for Newman. It was also posted at boston.com/needham right here.
You'll find a fair bit of back and forth prompted by Freeman's letter at that link.

And we've published several stories about Newman. Click here for our report on the $450,000 request for design money before Town Meeting. Click here for a report in February on the state's interest in the project.
