Needham hospital wins stroke prevention award

The Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham has been recognized for its commitment and success in implementing a high standard of stroke care with the American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Stroke ¬Gold Performance Achievement Award. The hospital won the award last year as well.
Stroke patients at BID-Needham receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. The hospital is equipped to provide brain imaging scans and has neurologists available to conduct patient evaluations as part of its comprehensive system to quickly diagnose and treat stroke patients in the emergency room.
BID-Needham also educates patients after they have had a stroke to manage risk factors, providing patient literature in both English and Spanish. Teaching patients in the hospital has proven to be affective, as they are most likely to listen and follow the guidance of their healthcare professional when they are still in the hospital following a stroke. Following such advice can help reduce the patients’ risk of a second heart attack or stroke.
The hospital demonstrated 85% adherence to Get With The Guidelines-Stroke key measures for 24 or more consecutive months to receive the award.
“Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham is always working to improve patient care,” said Penny Greenberg, RN, executive vice president and chief nursing officer at BID-Needham. “Implementing GWTG-Stroke Patient Care Guidelines allows us to provide the most effective care early on for stroke patients. We are not only prepared for patients now but we are constantly evaluating our stroke program to make sure we are ready for the future.”
