Walker School gets a free solar-powered shed
One Penny Per Mile, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides free sustainable energy systems to schools, has delivered its first completed project: a solar-powered garden/storage shed. The shed is for the Walker School in Needham.
The shed has two 85 Watt solar panels, and provides power for lights. Lights are controlled by a dusk-to-dawn motion sensor; when the interior light goes on, along with the exterior sidewalk light, children can view the internal workings of the solar equipment through the viewing windows, according to a press release.
The project was funded with the help of car owners, who contribute a penny for every mile they drive as a means of directly compensating for the environmental effects of driving. Mister Sparky electricians of Needham did the electrical wiring for the shed and numerous other volunteers helped make the project a reality.
