Author-foundation founder to speak at Eliot
John Wood, the author of “Leaving Microsoft to Change the World” and founder of the Room-to-Read foundation will speak at a school-wide assembly at the John Eliot Elementary School in Needham on Friday, Nov. 6.
The Room-to-Read foundation works with local communities in developing countries to provide educational opportunities such as libraries and constructing schools, according to its mission statement. Eliot students have been working with the organization to raise money by reading books.
The students have also been studying countries such as India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zambia, where the Room-to-Read foundation operates.
They have set up classroom goals to “travel” to those places by tracking miles by the pages they have read, and earning money for those miles. So far, the students have surpassed their $1,000 goal by hundreds of dollars and plan to raise even more, according to a press release.
Wood will thank the students for their work and talk about the mission of the foundation. The assembly will begin at 9 a.m.
