Parent Talk Corner: Sharing favorite blogs

Posted November 6, 2009 04:30 PM

Blogs have dramatically changed the landscape of the internet. Anyone can write and publish an online blog, so anyone with a passion, an issue to promote, or a desire to share their thoughts with people they know – or with total strangers who happen to Google the right word sequence – can publish their work.

Many blogs are written by parents, chronicling their experiences, providing advice, or offering specific perspectives on parenting. Some of these blogs are fantastic, a window into someone else’s thoughts and experiences that we can gain support from, learn from, or relate to in a personal way; many, a total waste of time. And who has time to sift through millions of blogs on the off-chance that one might be worth reading? (If you said “I do”, then I need your help at my house with some cooking, organizing, and bed-time stories. Call me.)

For the rest of us, find below a short list of parenting blogs offering a variety of perspectives that are worth a look when you get that elusive free minute.

Food for My Family: www.foodformyfamily.com
How can you resist a blog that offers a post on five days of recipes you can make with after-St-Patty’s-Day sale priced corned beef? But that’s just one little tidbit. Food for My Family offers recipes, menu planning advice, and a great section called “On the Patio” which contains posts from the family griller. Rather than a blog about “family friendly” fare, it is one family’s love affair with good food.

Tree Hugging Family: www.treehuggingfamily.com
This blog offers a wide array of advice for families who want to incorporate eco-friendly practices into family life. What is nice about this blog is that it isn’t a turn-off for those who aren’t fully committed to green living. It offers practical information that is applicable to an average family, product reviews and recommendations, and great organization, including topical areas such as “Eco-Baby” and “Green Cleaning.”

Suddenly Frugal: suddenlyfrugal.wordpress.com
While not all posts are focused on family-specific savings, many are. Written by a freelance writer and author of a book by the same name, posts are frequent and informative. Of special family interest: tips on how to save on school photos, school supplies on the cheap, and ways to eat out on the cheap with kids.

Scary Mommy: www.scarymommy.com
This blog delivers on its tagline, “An honest take on motherhood.” It is one woman’s writings on motherhood, family and marriage, written in a way that makes it relatable for anyone with a young family. It is personal, without being filled with “too much information” moments (prevalent in many blogs) and is metered out in bite-sized posts that don’t require a commitment to read.

Mommy-Tracked: www.mommytracked.com
Although not a blog, this website qualifies in many ways. All opinion all the time, the site offers cheeky commentaries on current events and family/work life. With a variety of perspectives shared through personal experiences (ranging from a discussion of the portrayal of moms in pop culture to dealing with tween/teens in an increasingly tricky/techie world), there’s something here for every mom.

Hope you enjoy this sampling. Do you have any favorite family-related blogs? Please add them in the comment area below!
