Fire damages home in Needham
A two-alarm fire tore through a home in Needham Monday and caused an estimated $500,000 in damage.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at 52 William St. at 9 a.m., said Fire Chief Paul Buckley. Arriving crews found heavy fire coming from the garage of the two-story house, and flames spread to the second floor and attic.
No one was injured in the blaze, Buckley said. The only person home when the fire started was a housekeeper, who evacuated safely. The flames destroyed the right half of the house. Smoke and water damaged the rest of the structure.
"Because of the integrity of the structure being compromised, they may end up just tearing it down," Buckley said.
It took crews from Needham, Westwood, Wellesley and Dedham about two hours to knock down the fire because of cold temperatures, Buckley said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation but appears to have been the disposal of fireplace ashes in the garage, Buckley said. The house was equipped with smoke detectors.
