The aftermath of the crash

Four people were injured when a car smashed this afternoon into a Dunkin' Donuts on Chestnut Street in Needham, local police said in a statement.

A 2007 Lexus SUV driven by a 62-year-old Sherborn woman struck the shop at about 12:45 p.m., police said. The driver, a passenger in the car, a shop employee, and a customer were injured.

The victims were taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Needham with "varying injuries," police said. Police had no further information on their condition.

Alice Fernandes, owner of the doughnut shop, said she had heard that the employee who was injured suffered only minor injuries. She said she had no idea how much repairing the shop would cost.

Fred Betz, 68, of Hopkinton, who works in the Christian Science reading room, which is across a driveway from the doughnut shop, said, "I heard a bang and the police were there in a minute flat."

The car was towed out of the shop shortly after 3 p.m.

Needham police said they were investigating with the help of the State Police.
