Special election dates set for Scott Brown state senate seat
Voters in Needham and several other area communities will select a successor to Scott Brown in the state Senate in a special election this May.
The state Senate announced that residents of Brown’s former state Senate district will vote May 11, with party primaries scheduled for April 13, according to State House News Service.
Brown’s Norfolk, Bristol, and Middlesex district includes Millis, Needham, Wrentham, Sherborn, Wayland, and North Attleborough and precincts and wards in Attleboro, Franklin, Natick, and Wellesley, the news service reported.
Democrats Peter Smulowitz and state Representative Lida Harkins, both of Needham, are expected to face off in the preliminary. Republican state Rep. Richard Ross has declared he is running for the seat, and would face the winner of the Democratic race.
According to the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance, Smulowitz had $27,386 on hand at the end of 2009. About 60 fellow physicians have contributed to Smulowitz' campaign, records show.
That trumps his Democratic rival, long-time State Representative Harkins, who ended the year with $7,192 on hand.
Republican Richard Ross said last week that while he is prepared to face any candidate in the election, he presumes he will face Harkins, an established Democrat in Massachusetts politics.
Ross’s end of the year campaign balance stood at $14,205. According to Ross, he is nearing what Smulowitz had on hand at the end of last year, though “not quite $30,000.” Ross said that he has three large fundraisers coming up this month, which he expects will contribute greatly to his campaign coffers.
