A 44-year-old Needham man has been arraigned on charges that he tried to kill his toddler son.

Alan Fuchs pleaded innocent to charges of attempted murder and domestic assault and battery in Dedham District Court on Tuesday.

He was ordered to Bridgewater State Hospital for a mental health evalutation, said David Traub, a spokesman for the Norfolk Country district attorney's office.

Needham police said Fuchs was arrested Monday at a home on Fairfield Street after the child’s mother called 911, saying the man was assaulting his son.

The child, who was under 2 years old, was taken to Newton-Wellesley Hospital for evaluation as a precaution. There were no signs of major injury to the boy, police said in a statement.

Fuchs is due back in court on May 13, Traub said.
