Teenagers swooning with puppy love don’t always know the facts on teen dating violence – but Needham Youth Services aims to educate them.
This month, Youth Services clinician Katy Coltheart is visiting each of Needham’s 15 ninth-grade classrooms to teach a 90-minute workshop on teen dating violence.
“They don’t necessarily know what to look for,” she said. “I also think there’s that naivete – they’re new to relationships.”
The seminars focus on what dating violence is, why people stay in abusive relationships, warning signs to look for, and how to help yourself or a friend.
One in three teenagers experiences dating violence, she said.
