The town of Needham held its first Responsible Beverage Server training program last week, working with local restaurants to ensure the safe and legal service of alcohol.

The town is facing a shift in its alcohol regulations – a question about whether to allow liquor stores to move into the town is headed for a town-wide ballot pending legislature approval.

Last week’s alcohol training program was aimed at holders of existing liquor licenses. Restaurants in Needham are allowed to serve alcohol.

Thirty-four attendees participated in “21 Proof,” a locally-developed, nationally recognized alcohol service training program. Staff from local restaurants Acapulcos, Bertucci’s, Blue on Highland and Fuji Steak House, among others, participated.

The event was sponsored by the Board of Selectmen, the Public Health department, and the Needham Police department. It was funded by a federal grant through the Needham Coalition for Youth Substance Abuse Prevention.
