Suicide prevention training for Needham parents and adults

The Needham Coalition for Suicide Prevention and Needham Youth Services are offering suicide prevention training for adults and parents.

The training is based on the QPR Suicide Prevention model – QPR stands for Question, Persuade, Refer.

It teaches that people who are most in need of help are least likely to ask for it; that the person most likely to prevent an individual from committing suicide is someone that person already knows; and that before making a suicide attempt, people usually send warning signs of their distress to those around them, according to a release sent out by Needham Youth Services.

The training will also look at some myths that surround suicide. It will explore the signs of suicide, examine the difference between suicide and self injury, and teach participants how to help a person in distress.

There are two training dates available: Nov. 27 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and March 3, 2013, from 7p.m. to 9 p.m. Sessions are held at Needham Town Hall in the May-Chapel Room.

Only 25 participants will be allowed in each session. Each participant should choose just one session.
