The sixth annual New Year’s Needham Celebration will kick off on Monday, Dec. 31, with events all over town and a Countdown Party at Powers Hall, and finish up with a 5k New Year's Day road race.
At the Episcopal Church, there will be several bands, including a men’s a capella group at 6 p.m. and the Longwood Opera at 7 p.m. The Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall will feature different dance groups from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and an adults only comedian from 8 p.m. to 9:10 p.m. There will be family activities through most of the day at the Masonic Hall, music at the Christian Science Church and the Congregational Church, dancing at the Unitarian Church Parish Hall, puppet shows at St. Joe’s Kennedy Gym, and a dance band and dance performance at Town Hall.
Residents can check out this calendar for a full listing of activities.
A trolley will be doing pick-ups and drop-offs at all the New Year’s Needham sites. A map of the trolley loop can be found here.
New Year’s Eve will be capped off with a Countdown Party in Powers Hall, starting at 9 p.m., and including dancing, light food and a cash bar. The Family Jewels of Cambridge will be playing R&B and doo-wop favorites.
Needham residents who want to take part in the festivities should grab a New Year’s Needham button for $5. Buttons are on sale at Roche Brothers, Sudbury Farms, Needham Park & Rec Commission, Needham Public Library, Needham Town Hall, Taylor’s Stationery, Volante Farms, Needham Senior Center and Perennial Designs. The button does not include admission to the Countdown Party. Tickets for the party are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. They are being sold at Town Hall and online here.
If the New Year’s Eve fun wasn’t enough, there will be a road race at 11 a.m. on New Year’s Day. The Needham Running Club’s New Year’s Day 5k run will benefit the YMCA, Needham Cultural Council and the Needham Education Foundation.
It will begin at the YMCA Pool Building at 863 Great Plain Ave. Food, sports drinks, and water will be served at the end of the race. Information about registration can be found here. The race costs $20 in advance and $25 on race day.
