The Needham Board of Selectmen voted unanimously on Tuesday night to sponsor a warrant article calling for a moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries and cultivation in town until March 1, 2014, according to Needham Support Services Manager Sandy Cincotta.

The Planning Board will hold a public hearing on the article, which will go before Town Meeting in May.

The moratorium was inspired by concerns that town officials would not have enough time to write local regulations to guide the implementation of the newly legalized medical marijuana law, which Massachusetts voters passed in November. The state health department is working on statewide regulations, but those will not be out until May.

Last week, the Planning Board voted not to sponsor the article, saying the Board of Selectmen was the more appropriate sponsor. Planning Board Chair Bruce Eisenhut said that the decision was not a judgment on the moratorium itself, and that the board would keep an open mind through the hearing, when it will vote on whether to recommend passage to Town Meeting.
