Needham recreation officials are encouraging local residents to get involved in a free national competition that seeks to inspire kids to connect with nature and take part in outdoor activities.

The national "Get to Know" contest, which runs through Nov. 1 in the US and Canada, aims to motivate youth to submit art, writing, photography, video, and music inspired by the great outdoors.

Winners will get their works published in the organization's electronic 2014 calendar, and have the option to win other prizes like underwater cameras, gift cards, and other outdoorsy items, according to the contest's website.

Organization officials say that the competition seeks to reconnect local kids with nature as youth increasingly opt to spend more time doing indoor activities, which can lead to a sedentary lifestyle and a negative effect on children's development.

For more information, visit the organization's website, or find out more by contacting Needham's recreation department.
