Parking in Needham might soon get a bit pricier.

The Needham Board of Selectmen is considering a proposal that would raise town parking permit and meter fees and install more parking meters downtown and in Needham Heights, officials said.

Under the new proposal, meter rates would cost a nickel for 5 minutes, a dime for 10 minutes, and a quarter for 30 minutes, according to officials at Town Hall.. Currently, a quarter buys one hour at the meters.

Permit parking rates are also currently slated to raise to $125 for 2014, $165 for 2015, and $200 for 2016. The permits allow locals to park for extended periods during the day at one of the five lots around town, officials said.

A public hearing on the proposal will be held Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7:05 p.m. at Needham Town Hall.

Anyone who wishes to submit written comments about the proposal can email selectmen@needhamma.gov, or send to: Board of Selectmen, c/o Needham Town Hall, 1471 Highland Ave., Needham, Mass.
