The Needham Historical Society is hosting a free reception this month to celebrate the dedication of a room in honor of Daniel "Bud" Roche, co-founder of Roche Bros. supermarkets and a longtime Needham resident, officials said.

The society is renaming one of their building's room after Roche's death in September. Gloria Greis, the society's executive director, said the grocery store founder played a key role in the Needham Historical Society relocating to a more spacious and accessible facility near Newman Elementary School.

The society wanted to move two local historical houses onto the property, but doing so required an aggressive fundraising campaign and collaborating with town officials, Greis said.

"We had never raised that kind of money before -- we're a small organization," Greis said. "But Bud stepped up and made a sizable personal donation that signaled to people that this project was a go. Without his support, it wouldn’t have happened."

The historical society moved into their new building in 2006, Greis said.

"After Bud's death we thought, instead of sending a donation, we could do something a bit more meaningful, so we're naming one of the rooms in his honor," she said.

The reception will take place Sunday, Feb. 23 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Needham Historical Society, located at 1147 Central Ave. Refreshments will be served. The reception is free and open to the public.
