The Newton School Committee will meet Monday at 7 p.m in the Ed Center on Walnut Street to discuss Superintendent Jeffrey Young's $164.1 million budget proposal for fiscal 2010. It will also hear an update from a subcommittee created to review recommendations from the Citizen Advisory Group.
The Citizen Advisory Group, a panel of 14 citizens appointed by Newton's elected leaders to find ways the city can save and raise money, was critical of the district, saying it shows signs of erosion.
Its recommendations to the school system included increasing fees for transportation, overhauling the school lunch program, and hiring a chief financial officer.
Young's budget for next fiscal year calls for a 2.5 percent increase over the current year.
