Bridge work in Brookline will close D Line for five weekends
The MBTA is preparing to tear down the Dean Road bridge next to the Beaconsfield T stop in Brookline next spring in a construction project that will also shut down a portion of the D Line for five weekends.
MBTA officials have not set the exact dates of when the shutdowns will occur because they are awaiting the release of the Boston Red Sox’s 2010 schedule in an effort to coordinate the Green Line T access for baseball fans.
But the MBTA is hoping to tear down the Dean Road bridge—near Cleveland Circle—around Memorial Day and the roadway would be closed from May, 2010, until February, 2011. The construction is expected to end the following month.
Joseph Nolan, a community outreach coordinator for the MBTA, said the bridge is more than 100 years old and needs to be replaced entirely.
Built in 1892, the bridge was modified in 1932, according to the MBTA, and has visibly deteriorated.
MBTA officials have met with neighbors about the project, Nolan said, and most of the construction will be during the day.
The Beaconsfield T stop will remain open during most of the construction. But on five separate weekends, including the weekend in which the bridge is demolished, the D Line will be closed from Reservoir Station in Cleveland Circle to Fenway Station. Bus service will be provided on those weekends, according to the MBTA.
Brookline Engineering and Transportation Director Peter Ditto said the town will have detours in place while Dean Road is closed.
The MBTA will put the construction project out to bid this fall.
