Sports-a-Thon fundraiser to be held for Beatrice family
An all-day Sports-a-Thon and fundraiser will be held on Veteran’s Day to honor Newton native and youth sports coach Jeffrey Beatrice, who died in late-October at age 49 of an apparent heart attack.
The goal of the event is to help the Beatrice family.
Activities will be held at the Albemarle Field Complex on Nov. 11 and community members are asked to form teams to participate in either baseball, softball, or flag football.
The teams will play for about an hour and receive a t-shirt “commemorating the day that they all got together and made a difference,” said an e-mail announcing the memorial event.
Teams, consisting of 10 or more players will make a donation to the Jeffrey Beatrice Family Fund.
All donation amounts will be kept confidential and no team will be turned away at any donation level.
“His surviving family feels, I have no doubt, very blessed to have had him in their lives while he was here. They celebrate the man he was and treasure the memories they have with him. However, they are burdened by his loss, not only emotionally, but financially as well,” said Kate Slocum in the e-mail.
“We, as a community, have an opportunity to support this family in their time of need,” she added. “We have an opportunity to say thank you for all that Jeff has given to all of us and our children over the years. We have an opportunity to allow our children to say thank you to Jeff and all that he’s given and taught them over the years. “
Interested parties, or individuals who want to participate but do not know anyone forming a team, can contact Kate Slocum at kathryn@slocum.org or call 781-771-7792.
Specifics about the Sports-A-Thon
Teams should be made up by the following guidelines:
• An adult should be point person for the team and help organize the following:
• Pick one sport to play: baseball, softball, or flag football. All teams can be co-ed, it’s up to you.
• In order for the kids to have fun and be able to compete, pick an age group: elementary, middle school, high school or older.
• Contact potential athletes and get them on board. Teams should have enough players to field all positions. Teams will only play a limited time, so don’t make the teams too large, or the kids won’t get enough play time.
• When you have a team started, contact Katie Slocum. Let her know what sport and age and if you need any help finding players.
• Collect donations. Checks should be made out to: Jeffrey Beatrice Family Fund. Bring them on Nov 11.
• You will be assigned an opponent and a time slot. Arrive early to get your shirts and warm up.
