Newton South High School is one of the best schools in the nation, according to Newsweek magazine’s listing of “America’s Best Schools.” Newton South came in 988th in the list of 1,600 top schools, with the ranking based on the number of students taking advanced exams.
Twenty-seven Massachusetts high schools made the list.

The high school rankings looked at the total number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Cambridge tests given at high schools in 2009, divided by the number of graduating students. The 1,600 schools that made the cut represent 6 percent of public high schools, according to the rankings.
Newton South averaged 1.6 advanced tests per student, and the listing said that 66 percent percent of Newton South seniors passed an AP or IB test.
