A lacrosse player at Newton North High School who died in a car accident Monday night was not wearing a seatbelt, according to WCVB-TV, which quoted the victim’s father.
Adam London, 17, who was about to enter his senior year, died when his car struck a tree on Bellevue Street in Newton Corner, said Jennifer Price, principal of Newton North.
Howard London said his son will be honored by reminding young drivers to wear their seatbelts, the television station reported.
"Those kids have got to buckle up,'' the station quoted him as saying. "That's how they are going to remember him and honor him."
When the crash occurred at 9:46 p.m., there were no passengers in the car, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s office. Officials said the crash is still under investigation, and would not comment on the station’s report.
Rescue crews had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate London, witnesses said. The night of the crash, the curvy road running down a hill had been wet from rain, said Laurie Greene, who lives on Bellevue Street and saw the accident scene.
Grief councilors were at the school Tuesday afternoon, while a dozen of London’s teammates gathered at the scene of the accident, where mementos have collected.
