Demolition is underway at the former site of Omni Foods Supermarket on Route 9 East in Newton

Construction is underway to build Chestnut Hill Square, a complex of offices, stores, and residences on the former site of the Omni Foods Supermarket on Route 9 in Newton.

The 240,000 square feet of commercial space will carry retail stores, medical offices, a grocery store, restaurants, and a health club, said Douglass Karp, executive vice president of New England Development.

“We are close to announcing stores, but cannot announce them today,” said Karp. “We do have a signed lease with Equinox to be an anchor as the health club.”

Equinox is a national health fitness club chain, with more than 50 sites in the United States.

Karp said in the project’s second phase, 90 units of housing will also be built on the property.

Demolition began on July 7, according to the site superintendent, Mark Stanton of John Moriarty and Associates, Inc.

Karp said the complex will open sometime in mid 2013.

“I think the project is going excellent,” said Stanton. “Everybody is very cooperative. It is always nice to see vacant buildings coming down.”

Stanton said the contractors are currently in the demolition phase. Utilities should be finished by the end of the year, and construction can begin after that.
