Police closed a section of Needham Street in Newton late this afternoon after a fuel tank of an 18-wheel truck was damaged, causing fuel to leak out, according to an advisory sent to residents.
The 50-gallon tank on the truck's cab was damaged at about 5:10 p.m. Needham Street heading toward Needham was closed, and traffic in that direction was being detoured down Winchester to Goddard to Christina streets and back onto Needham Street.
As of the 6:10 p.m. advisory, Newton Police and Fire Departments were on the scene managing the incident. The Fire Department contained the spill, with no fuel going into the storm drains and Clean Harbors was overseeing the cleanup.
It was unkown when Needham Street would fully reopen.
