Newton police issued 26 motor vehicle citations during crosswalk enforcement stings Monday in four locations around the city.

Police pulled over cars whose drivers did not follow the crosswalk safety laws.

This is the third time Newton has performed crosswalk stings within in the past four months. Similar operations were conducted on October 6th and September 14th.

The stings were conducted by members of the Newton Police Department Traffic Bureau with a Boston College police officer starting at 9:30 a.m, said a press release.

Monday's stings were set up at the intersection of Beacon Street and Stone Road, Walnut Street and Madison Avenue, Craft Street and Linwood Avenue, and Walnut Street and Fisher Avenue.

“The locations were at various streets due to the number complaints,” said the release.

Fifteen civil motor vehicle infractions and six warnings were issued at the Beacon St. and Stone Rd. intersection.

Five civil motor vehicle infractions and three warnings were issued at the Walnut St. and Madison Ave. intersection.

No infractions or warnings were issued at the Craft St. and Linwood Ave. intersection.

Six civil motor vehicle infractions and three warnings were issued at the Walnut St. and Fisher Ave. intersection.

Civil motor vehicle infractions can cost the driver up to $200 in fines, said Lieutenant Commander Bruce Apotheker, a Newton police spokesman in an earlier interview.

During the sting, the Boston College police officer was dressed in plain clothes, acting as the pedestrian, said the release.

A Newton officer acted as the point person who witnessed the violations and would radio ahead the description of the vehicle and direction of travel. Newton officers were at both the beginning and end of the target area.

The stings on October 6th issued 53 motor vehicle infractions at the intersection of Beacon Street and Dalton Road in Newton Centre, the intersection of Beacon Street and Lawrence Road near Boston College, the intersection of Center Street and Allerton Road, and the intersection of Walnut Street and Tiger Drive outside Newton North High School.

During the September 14th stings, officers issued about two dozen citations to motorists at Beacon Street by the Boston College campus and in Newton Highlands.
