Newton has been named the fifth safest city in America for 2011-2012, among communities with a population between 75,000 to 99,999, according to CQ Press.

The rankings conducted annually by the CQ Press considered 134 US cities in that population range.

According to the CQ Press website, the rankings consider murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft.

Newton was named the safest city in America for two straight years in 2004 and 2005. Last year the city was named the seventh safest city in its population range.

This year Fishers, Ind. was named the safest city in America in the 75,000 to 99,999 population range. No other Massachusetts city cracked the top 10 in any population range.

New Bedford was ranked as having the seventh highest crime rate among US cities in the same population range as Newton, while Brockton ranked ninth.
