Newton hired Robert Barrett as its first chief information officer to oversee technology city-wide.

Barrett, who was previously the chief information officer for struggling Waltham-based battery maker A123  Systems Inc., will start his new job on July 9.

Barrett will coordinate the city's efforts in using technology to deliver better services to residents and ensure that all departments are working cohesively, said Maureen Lemieux, the city's chief financial officer.

Barrett said in a press release that the city's challenge is to develop, "consistent standards, resources and processes in order to build a reliable and cost-effective IT infrastructure to support the rapidly growing demands."

Barrett's salary will be $119,200, Lemieux said.
