Newton Police are investigating a reported rape of a student at Andover Newton Theological School, a small graduate school perched above Newton Centre.
A female student reported to school officials that she was attacked on the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 14. She was in the basement bathroom of Stoddard Hall, an auditorium on campus, standing by the sink when she was grabbed, thrown to the ground and raped, according to a press release from the Newton Police Department.
Investigators haven’t spoken to the victim yet, but she told school staff that her attacker was a white male and wore a facemask, the report stated.
“Our entire community is saddened,” said Nick Carter, the school’s president.
According to the latest data available from the US Department of Education, there were no reported criminal incidents at Andover Newton between 2008 and 2010. The graduate school of 285 students has a night watchperson but no security personnel because of its size, Carter said.
School administrators have met with and counseled staff and students and are reviewing the safety procedures, Carter said.
The school was hosting a convention on the weekend of the reported rape and according to the police there were 250 non-students on the campus.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the police department’s detective bureau at 617-796-2104 or the Newton Police Tip Line at 617-796-2121.
