Newton Mayor Setti Warren has received additional security in recent days, the city’s police department confirmed.
Warren, who usually travels with just a staff member, was accompanied out of City Hall after a night meeting this week by a Newton police officer.
The mayor’s office directed all comments to the police department.
“Due to concerns for the mayor’s personal safety, we are giving him a more watchful approach,” said Lieutenant Bruce Apotheker, a police spokesman. “Mayor Warren has not received a specific threat, but a situation has recently arisen where we feel this proactive approach is reasonable at this time.”
Apotheker declined to provide details on the security approach or what incident raised concerns. The matter is under investigation, Apotheker said.
The police department has assigned officers to watch over Newton public officials temporarily in the past when concerns arise.
