Funeral services have been scheduled for longtime Newton Alderman Carleton Merrill, who died Wednesday at age 88, the mayor's office said.

A wake will be held Monday, Jan. 28 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Eaton-Mackay Funeral Home, located at 465 Centre St, Newton. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m. at Newton Cemetery Chapel, located at 791 Walnut St., Newton.

Merrill was a World War II veteran and one of the longest serving aldermen on the board. He was an alderman in the 1950s for a few terms, then worked as the city’s veterans agent for 34 years before retiring and returning to the Board of Aldermen.
