Newton Police are searching for a man who robbed a Walgreens Pharmacy in Newton Corner at knifepoint Monday night, beat a 67-year-old employee who tried to stop him, and then fled with a bag of stolen drugs.

Just before 6:30 p.m. on Monday, a man in a dark-colored Patriots sweatshirt with the hood pulled tight over his face entered the Walgreens at 399 Washington St. and jumped over the pharmacy counter, brandishing a knife at the pharmacist and demanding drugs, according to Lieutenant Bruce Apotheker.

The suspect had a plastic back with him and filled it with drugs from the shelves,, Apotheker said. Then he jumped back over the counter and began running down the aisles of the store.

Another employee, a 67-year-old man, heard the commotion near the pharmacy.

“He realized the store was being robbed,” said Apotheker, “so he made an announcement over the loudspeaker that the store was being robbed, to call 911.”

Then the employee went down the aisle towards the suspect, who was running toward him. The suspect began punching and kicking the employee, who was later taken to Newton-Wellesley Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, said Apotheker. No further information was available on the employee’s condition.

A shopper in the store saw the suspect flee down Hovey Street.

Newton Police searched the area with K-9 units, but did not find the suspect.

The suspect was described as a white man, around 40 years old and more than six feet tall, with a heavy build. He was wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt, tied tightly to hide his face, with white Patriots writing across the chest, according to the police statement. He was wearing grey sweatpants with a stripe down the side, and white sneakers.
