The Newton Police Department, coming off an episode that led to the departure of their police chief, now faces a report that five of its officers egged the Framingham home of a Newton police sergeant as a prank.

In a statement today Newton Interim Police Chief Howard Mintz said the five off-duty officers who were involved in egging the superior officer’s house Dec. 11 violated the department’s conduct standards and will face discipline.

Mintz did not reveal the details of the discipline or the names of the officers involved. The department conducted an internal investigation after learning about the incident, Mintz said in the statement.

“Actions by anyone from this department, which is contrary to our rules and regulations will not be tolerated and dealt with swiftly,” Mintz said.

Newton department spokesman Lt. Bruce Apotheker said that the officers would face discipline even if the incident is a prank.

The MetroWest Daily News reported Friday that Framingham police were called to the home to check on a report of two teenagers egging a home.

Police stopped a car and found two adults. A third adult was located near the home. .

They told Framingham police the egging incident was ‘‘a prank, a joke between friends,’’ the newspaper reported.

No charges were filed.

The egging incidents follow a year of turmoil at the department .

In October, Newton mayor Setti Warren fired Police Chief Matthew Cummings for “conduct unbecoming” following a hearing into inappropriate comments he allegedly made to three women in his department, including his former secretary.

The Globe reported that Cummings could qualify for an annual government pension of as much as $129,000, topping all other retired workers in the city’s system.
