A homeless man suspected of stealing money from the Newton Free Library was arrested early Wednesday morning after he was found in one of the building’s bathrooms.

Pedro Lopez, 23, has been charged with breaking and entering into a depository and larceny, according to a press release from the Newton Police Department.

Police went to the library at about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday after the building’s alarm went off. Officers noticed that two cash registers were opened and their contents were missing, according to the police.

In searching the library, a police dog detected a human scent coming from the locked bathroom. Officers were able to get into the bathroom and found Lopez, the report said.
Lopez was carrying cash, loose change, a flashlight and other tools, the report said.

Lopez has outstanding warrants against him in Waltham District Court for motor vehicle violations and two counts of breaking into a depository.
