Middesex and Suffolk County prosecutors have decided to terminate the state’s cases against former Newton teacher David Ettlinger, who was sentenced to a 45-year federal prison term for child pornography earlier this year.

The decision was made after considering the length of Ettlinger’s federal prison sentence and the families’ request to not subject their children to any additional media attention and the possibility of testifying in court, Jake Wark, the spokesman for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, said in an e-mail.

“Prosecutors determined that the most appropriate course of action was not to prosecute their respective cases further,” Wark said.

Ettlinger faced state charges that he had allegedly abused two children in Suffolk County and one in Middlesex County.

None of the children were his students. Ettlinger was a popular second-grade teacher and offered his babysitting services online when he was arrested in January 2012.

He pleaded guilty last August to participating in an online child pornography message board.
