Rox Café, the latest restaurant project from the owners of Rox Diner, is scheduled to open at the end of June, taking over a long-empty, prime space in the Newton Highlands.

Owners John Fortin and Paul Louderback don’t have an exact date for the opening, but plans call for the restaurant to open in the last week of June, said a spokeswoman with Regan Communications Group, the public relations firm for the restaurant.

The eatery will open in the storefront formerly occupied by Bakers’ Best on Lincoln Street. Bakers’ Best, which was an anchor for the Newton Highlands village, closed in December 2011 so its owner could focus more on the company’s Needham-based catering services. The departure of a such a key business reduced walk-in traffic and hobbled other stores in the village, several business owners have said.

Rox Café will be a more upscale version of Fortin’s and Louderback’s Rox Diner concept. Rox Café will have a bar area and market section, where customers can buy takeout salads, sandwiches and desserts, in addition to its restaurant seating, according to a press release.

It will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Fortin and Louderback own a Rox Diner in Newtonville and West Roxbury.
