Wegmans has begun hiring full-time employees for its new grocery store scheduled to open in Chestnut Hill in the spring of 2014.

The store in Newton near the Brookline line will employ about 550 people, including 450 people who will be hired locally, according to a press release from the New York-based supermarket chain Wednesday. The company is now hiring at least 150 full-time positions, including entry-level management positions and customer service. The hiring of part-time positions will be announced at a later date, according to the company.

The Chestnut Hill store at the site of the old Omni Foods Supermarkets on Route 9 will be Wegmans' second in Massachusetts, and will be 82,000 square feet.

Marybeth Stewart, Wegmans human resources manager for New England, said anyone interested in applying should contact the company now because the positions will fill up quickly.

“Wegmans has approximately 45,000 employees chain-wide and with flexible scheduling, a competitive pay and benefits package, and a true family-like environment, we are recognized as one of the country’s best places to work,” said Stewart, in the company’s press release.

Full-time applicants can apply online at www.wegmans.com/careers or by calling 1-877-WEGMANS (934-6267) for more information. Applications are not available or accepted at the construction site and interviews are conducted by appointment only.
