New owners take over Adolph's Sporting Goods in Newton

When Karolina “Kay” Kowalczyk bought Adolph's Sporting Goods two weeks ago, she purchased more than an 800 sq. ft. store in Newton Centre - she bought into a local legacy.

“A huge part of the purchase was the name and the legacy” Kowalczyk said of the store, which she bought with her husband. “Business is growing and we’re growing with it. We’re holding onto this legacy.”

Kowalczyk plans to keep the store’s name, but is going to move to a larger location that offers three times the space of the current site. Adolph's will remain in Newton Centre, moving from its current location at 841 Beacon St. to 1280 Centre St.

She hopes to expand the products and services the store is known for – embroidery, silk screening and heat transfers – and begin carrying more accessories for sporting goods, and is even mulling the possibility of offering a skate sharpening service.

“If your child grew up in Newton center and played soccer, your uniform was done at Adolph’s,” she said. “These kids now have kids who are also playing in soccer leagues. It’s going to be generational.”

Kowalczyk feels the pressure of the “big shoes to fill” left behind by Adolph and Ursula Thomas, but is confident that she is ready for the task ahead.

“Customers like that personal interaction with the owner,” she noted. “That’s where I feel we’re going to take on his legacy, and take on his relationship with the neighborhood.”

In addition to moving the store to a larger locale, Kowalczyk has several other changes planned for the store. She hopes to increase the number of contracts with local organizations, moving past local sports groups to include area businesses and the fire department.

The store will also become more tech-driven as part of Kowalczyk’s efforts to bring it into the 21st century.

“Every customer that has come in and met me, a number of them have said I have something to live up to,” she said. “I already know that the expectation is high. I’m ready for the challenge.”
