Mayors Setti Warren of Newton and Jeannette McCarty of Waltham today will announce a softball game between the two towns.

The game, to be held on Oct. 1, is to promote the Veterans Center at the American Legion Post 440 in Newton. Rene Rancourt of the Boston Bruins will sing the National Anthem, and former Red Sox pitcher Jim Corsi will throw the ceremonial first pitch.

To raise the stakes, the mayors have placed a friendly wager on the game: ice cream from Cabots in Newton or Lizzy's in Waltham.

Anyone interested in playing for the Newton team or attending the game should contact Aaron Goldman at agoldman@newtonma.gov. The town is looking for veterans who may want to play on the team.

The Veterans Center is open on the first Tuesday of every month from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Veterans can socialize and get information about a range of topics, including housing, childcare and employment.

The softball game will be announced at 3 p.m. today at the mayor's office in Newton City Hall, at 1000 Commonwealth Ave.
