Christopher Columbus Park will be the site of a celebration Saturday marking both Independence Day and the Tall Ships.
The Friends of Christopher Columbus Park will celebrate Independence Day and the return of the Tall Ships to Boston with a series of events in the waterfront park on Saturday.
The free event will run from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 30. It is sponsored by the Friends, with assistance from Boston Pushcart, Al Dente Restaurant, Benevento’s, and Century Bank.
The festivities will begin with a 10 a.m. parade through the park, led by active-duty servicemen and women and an Uncle Sam on stilts. Small American flags will be provided, and children are encouraged to join the parade with their patriotically festooned bicycles, wagons, scooters, or other means of conveyance.
Performers will entertain the crowd starting at 10:15 with Jenny the Juggler, then Big Joe the Storyteller at 11:30, magician Peter O’Malley at 12:30, and a concert from the US Navy Band at 1:30.
The day will also include a musical petting zoo, face painting provided by the North End Music and Performing Arts Center, and lawn games courtesy of the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy.
