A small crowd gathered Tuesday night for the annual lighting of the great elm in the North End Greenway Parks.

North End residents came together Tuesday evening with city officials and representatives from the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy for the annual lighting of the great elm tree in the North End Greenway Parks.

During a brief ceremony that drew a small group of stalwart North Enders, Nancy Brennan, executive director of the conservancy, thanked the recently formed Friends of the North End Parks for their partnership with the conservancy and work in planting 12,000 daffodil bulbs that will bloom in these parks in spring.

“Thank you so much for your caring about this park so deeply and for literally getting in the dirt with us,” Brennan said. “We’re so grateful.”

City Councilor Salvatore LaMattina said the event was his “eighth and final tree lighting” of the holiday season as he stood together with longtime North End resident Nancy Caruso for the countdown.

LaMattina and Caruso, a retired Northeastern professor who co-founded of the North End Waterfront Central Artery Committee, reflected briefly on the long process of transforming the area from the former elevated Central Artery highway to the park system that now snakes through the downtown waterfront.

“The first meetings took place in the late ’80s, and this was the outcome of the work that was created then,” LaMattina said.

When he asked Caruso if she had thoughts she wanted to share, her message was short.

“I just want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and the happiest New Year, for all of us,” she said.
