Nativity comes to life in Norwell

Posted October 27, 2009 09:28 AM

Members of New Hope Chapel will bring the Christian Nativity scene to life on Norwell Common in December—a recreation that includes Jesus, Mary and Joseph, the three kings and barn animals that shared the stable where Jesus was born.

Elaine Donahue, a member who heads the Norwell church’s nativity committee, said when the event was held for the first time last December, festivities were cut short by 2-feet of snow.

“We were in the middle of a blizzard,” Donahue said. “We hope the weather will be better this year,” she said.

Because there is always a chance for snow, Donahue said snow plow drivers and others will be at the ready to clear paths to Norwell Common so visitors can enjoy the biblical reenactment.
The live nativity will take place on Sunday, Dec. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m.

The event is free to all.

The church will also host a live nativity at the Marshfield Fairgrounds two weeks earlier on Sunday, Dec. 6 when the Marshfield Kiwanis holds its annual Christmas tree sale.

Along with church members dressed as biblical figures, Donahue said there will be donkeys, sheep, and goats as part of the stable scene and in pens for petting.

Hayrides and pony rides will be available free of charge, as will food provided by two area restaurants and Christmas carols will be played on a sounds system.

Donahue said the church—a nondenominational church formed in 2006 and holds services at the Cushing Center in Norwell--decided to host the live nativity last year to show the real reason for the holiday season.

“It’s for people to see what Christmas is all about,” Donahue said. “What better way then the nativity,” she said.
