A controversial plan to close the Norwell Public Library on South Street is on the agenda for tonight's 7:30 meeting of the Norwell Board of Selectmen at Town Hall.

At the meeting, which the Norwell Library’s Board of Trustees is expected to attend, Norwell’s selectmen will present a proposal from the town of Hanover that would close the Norwell library and funnel Norwell’s library funding to Hanover.

Selectmen could decide tonight whether to put the proposal on the warrant for Annual Town Meeting.

The proposal, which Hanover says will save Norwell more than $325,000 over the next two fiscla years, and save Hanover approximately $125,000 in the same time period, would be the first time that officials know of that one town has closed its library and paid to use another town’s.

Opponents say the cost savings aren’t enjoy to justify the costs to a community that has no library.

Norwell spent approximately $560,000 on is library in FY2010 and Hanover spent approximately $520,000 on its library in FY2010.
